Since 2010, we have helped build compassionate care with our global partners

India – Home visit teams
Small brick shelters with tin roofs sit at the edge of a construction site in Bowrampeet on the outskirts of Hyderabad. One of the shelters is home for five-year-old Abhiram and his family.

Rural outreach program—India
In India, Two Worlds Cancer supported a Rural Outreach Program with our partners at the Hyderabad Centre for Palliative Care. An outreach team from the palliative care unit at Mehdi Nawaz Jung Institute visited villages initially to follow-up on patients receiving care for cancer — a team including a doctor, nurse and social worker and village health volunteers. As word spread of the team’s visits, patients with other chronic and serious-health issues started to visit the bi-monthly outreach clinics.
From this outreach program, three local hospices were built adjacent to district hospitals to extend the reach of palliative care into these rural districts. Known as Palliative Seva Kendra (PSK), the success of this initiative led to adoption of the program by the Telangana Government which funded the development of PSKs in all 31 districts in the state.
Makwanpur rural pilot project—Nepal
In Nepal, Two Worlds Cancer in partnership with NAPCare supported a three-year, rural care initiative in 2014—Makwanpur Rural Palliative Care Project.
Trained in palliative care, local health care teams from district-based health clinics visited remote villages providing palliative and chronic-health related care in a region that would otherwise have had none available. The teams also provided palliative care education to health centre staff, political leaders, village women, and students within the district.
Today the project is running sustainably and expanding to other districts with the support of the Nepal Ministry of Health.
Oral cancer screening pilot project—India
In 2018 Two Worlds Cancer partnered with UBC School of Dentistry, BC Cancer and Hyderabad partners to undertake a two-phase study in rural Telangana.
The study to determine the potential for community screening used visual, white light and blue light (VELscope™) examinations to detect early lesions and provided biopsy and referral for these rural patients. The initial phase in 2018 led to a successful pilot study of 1100 villagers in Telangana between November 2019 and January 2020.
Following the success of the oral cancer screening and early detection pilot program, Two Worlds Cancer is collaborating with our partners to initiate similar programs for cervical and other cancers.
